AHCA Announces Coaching Staffs of the Month For January

In the newest addition to the organization's official website (ahcahockey.com), the American Hockey Coaches Association is pleased to present the inaugural "Coaching Staffs of the Month" for the month of January 2003. Four different coaching staffs will be chosen each month.

The following coaching staffs have been recognized for their team's outstanding performance in the month of January:

DIVISION I MEN - COLORADO COLLEGE

The Colorado College coaching staff is the inaugural AHCA Coaching Staff of the month for their performance in January of 2003. The CC staff led the Tigers to a 4-0-3 mark in the month of January. The great month was started by two ties on the road vs. then #1 ranked North Dakota and finished off with two wins vs. the same #1 ranked North Dakota team at home in the World Arena at Colorado Springs. Also highlighting the month was a win and a tie at Michigan Tech and a home sweep of the Wisconsin Badgers.

Colorado College is led by head coach Scott Owens. In his fourth year at his alma mater, Owens is assisted by Joe Bonnett, Norm Bazin, and Terry Kleisenger.

Runner-Up: Cornell (6-1-0 in January)

DIVISION I WOMEN - UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA-DULUTH

Minnesota-Duluth, the two-time defending Division I National Champions, look to make another run at the title following a 6-1-0 month of January. The Bulldogs posted weekend sweeps over Dartmouth and MSU-Mankato while earning single wins against Wisconsin and Ohio State in the month of January. UMD also swept the weekend series from Ohio State with the second game occuring on February 1. The Bulldogs are currently ranked #2 in the country and sit at the top of the WCHA Women's standings

Minnesota-Duluth is led by head coach Shannon Miller, who started the UMD Division I program. Her assitants are Shawna Davidson, a four-year hockey letterwinner at the UNH, and Stacy Wilson, the captain of Team Canada in the 1998 Winter Olympic Games.

Runner-Up: New Hampshire (6-1-1 in January)

DIVISION III MEN - BOWDOIN COLLEGE

The Polar Bears finished the month of January with a 5-1-1 record, which included conference victories over UMass Boston, Babson, Williams, Tufts, and Trinity. The win over nationally ranked Trinity College gave Terry Meagher, now in his 20th season at the helm of the Bowdoin program, 326 career wins, tying the school record set by former coach Sid Watson.

The Polar Bears finished the month of January ranked 8th in the latest USCHO.com poll and in sole possession of second place in the NESCAC with a league record of 10-1-1 and an overall record of 12-2-1. Meagher is assisted by Jamie Dumont.

Runner-Up: Middlebury College (11-0-0 in January)

DIVISION III WOMEN - ELMIRA COLLEGE

The Soaring Eagles, the defending Division III National Champions, opened up 2003 determined to make it as memorable as 2002. In January, Elmira College took its first step towards that goal by finishing January 5-0 and outscoring its opponents 49-4. Under head coach Jamie Wood, Elmira posted wins over Neumann (2), SUNY-Cortland, Connecticut College, and Manhattanville. The 2-1 win against #3 Manhattanville on January 24 was a rematch of last season's NCAA Championship.

The coaching staff of Wood and assistant coach Jamie Jewers is now 42-3-3 in two seasons behind the Elmira bench.

Runner-Up: Bowdoin College (7-0-1 in January)
