Bob Daniels of Ferris State Is AHCA Division I Hockey Coach of the Year
Spencer Penrose Award To Be Presented on April 26 in Naples, FL

For his efforts in leading Ferris State to its first ever CCHA Regular Season Championship, FSU’s Bob Daniels is the 2003 Spencer Penrose Award winner, given to the Men’s Division I Coach of the Year. Daniels led Ferris to a record of 31-10-1, winning the school’s first CCHA title with a 22-5-1 mark. The season also produced a Hobey Baker finalist in CCHA Player of the Year Chris Kunitz.

A 1982 graduate of Michigan State, Daniels was a three-time “Coach of the Year” in the North American Junior Hockey League before entering the college ranks, first as an assistant (Illinois-Chicago and Ferris State) before landing the Bulldogs’ head coach position in 1989. His 11-year record at Ferris State is 180-207-33.

The runners-up for this year’s Spencer Penrose Award were Don Lucia of the University of Minnesota and Mike Schafer of Cornell University The Spencer Penrose Award is named after the Colorado Springs benefactor who built the Broadmoor Hotel Complex, site of the first ten NCAA Ice Hockey Championships..

College hockey’s Coach of the Year recipients are chosen by members of the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA). Winners will receive their awards at the annual AHCA Coach of the Year Banquet, held in conjunction with the AHCA Convention in Naples, FL. This year’s banquet is scheduled for Saturday, April 26.
