Tom “Red” Martin of Boston College
Named 2005 Lamoriello Award Winner

Thomas “Red” Martin, a former Boston College hockey captain and 1964 Olympian, is this year’s recipient of the Lou Lamoriello Award. The Lamoriello Award, founded in 2004 by the AHCA Retired Coaches, recognizes a former college hockey player or coach who has created a unique professional record of accomplishment after his or her days in college hockey.

Martin received his B.S. from Boston College in 1961. After graduation, he joined the Boston Office of Arthur Andersen & Co. where he earned his CPA certificate. In 1966 Tom moved to Cramer Electronics, Inc. as Corporate Controller and spent the next ten years as a key member of an organization that built itself into a multi-national company. In 1979, the company was acquired. Tom purchased the video operations division and retained the Cramer name. In 1982, Tom Martin founded Cramer Productions, a video production company that helped New England clients use the new, cutting-edge medium of video to communicate.

Under Tom’s management, Cramer earned a great word-of-mouth reputation and a solid client list. The company built off of its success by growing its services offering to include event production. After years of great success and substantial growth, Tom led Cramer in the purchase and refurbishment of its current home – turning a 70,000 sq. ft. warehouse into a state-of-the-art design and production facility in Norwood, Mass.

Today, Cramer is a unique, full-service, integrated marketing communications company offering services in event and video production, as well as interactive media, webcasting, print and direct marketing. The company employs 130 people and works out of its state-of-the-art Norwood (Mass.) facility. Tom Martin continues to oversee all operations, helping Cramer to service a wide variety of regional clients including Bayer Diagnostics, Boston College, CVS Pharmacy, EMC, Fidelity Investments, Gillett, Ocean Spray, Jordan’s Furniture, Raytheon, Reebok, Serono and The Boston Red Sox. Tom has also helped Cramer become a marketing partner for such national clients as Compaq – now the new HP, Macromedia, Michelin, Motorola, and PricewaterhouseCoopers.

In addition to Cramer’s work in the corporate sector, Martin also seeks out interesting non-corporate projects for the company. In particular, Tom has helped Cramer earn a reputation for producing great sports programs. Most recently, Cramer produced a number of critically-acclaimed sports videos, including “Boston Red Sox: 100 Years of Baseball History,” a three-hour video documentary that spans the entire history of the Red Sox organization. Cramer also received great recognition, including a prestigious Emmy Award, for its documentary, “Story of Golf,” which documented over 700 years of the noble game. “The Story of Golf” aired on PBS nationally and was featured on CBS during the broadcast of the 2000 Masters Tournament.

Under Tom’s leadership, Cramer also produced such video programs as the “Banner Years” (a Boston Garden retrospective), “Home Run Heroes” (a tribute to legendary Red Sox batters) and “Ray Bourque: The First 20 Years,” which was produced for a Symphony Hall performance and subsequent television broadcast. In 2002, Cramer added to its portfolio of sports documentaries when it released a 50-year retrospective of New England’s famous Beanpot Tournament. While Martin helps bring many corporate clients and special projects to Cramer, he also makes it a priority for himself and the company to serve non-profit and charitable organizations. He is a major contributor and Advisor to the Mass Hospital School, Caritas Christi Hospital, Action for Boston Community Development (ABCD) and the Francis Oimet Foundation. Additionally, Cramer serves a wide variety of charitable organizations by staging events and producing videos and other communication programs that assist with fundraising.

In a single year alone, Cramer contributed time and talent to such organizations as American Kidney Foundation, Big Big Sister, Bridge Over Troubled Waters, Carney Hospital, Easter Seals, Franciscan Children’s Hospital, Greater Boston Food Bank, Jewish Community Housing for the Elderly, March of Dimes, Mother Caroline Academy, Rosie’s Place, Second Helping, South Boston Community Health Center, The Cardinal’s Appeal and The Jimmy Fund.

While Tom Martin has made a significant impact in New England during his professional career, he is also still remembered as an outstanding athlete. While a student at BC, Tom captained the 1961 Hockey Team and was twice voted to the AHCA All-American Ice Hockey Team. He was also a member of the NCAA Regional 1 Championship Baseball Team, and in 1968 was inducted into BC’s Hall of Fame. His hockey jersey has been retired and hangs from the rafters at Conte Forum.

After college, Tom represented the United States in the 1962 World Ice Hockey Championship and was also Assistant Captain of the 1964 Olympic Hockey Team. Tom is also a member of the Woodland Golf Club and an avid golfer. In 1999 he won the Senior Division of the Ouimet Memorial Tournament and was runner-up in the Massachusetts State Seniors Championship.

At the heart of it all, Tom is a devoted family man. He and his wife June celebrated forty years of marriage in 2002 with their six sons, one daughter and sixteen grandchildren. Four of his sons, and his daughter, are employed at Cramer. Martin will receive his award on Friday eveing, April 22, at the 2005 AHCA Convention in Naples, Florida.
