Plans Going Forward for “Hockey Coaches Bible”

Delayed but still in the works. That’s the status of “The Hockey Coaches Bible,” an instructional book to be produced by member coaches of the American Hockey Coaches Association and published by Human Kinetics.

“We have stumbled a bit in terms of staying on schedule. But the quality of what has been turned in so far is just what we were hoping for,” said AHCA Executive Director Joe Bertagna, who will serve as the book’s editor.

Human Kinetics has published a number of sport-specific instructional books such as “The Baseball Coaches Bible” and “The Football Coaches Bible.” To date, the following chapters have been submitted for “The Hockey Coaches Bible”:

  • “International Competition and Styles of Play,” by Mike Eaves, University of Wisconsin
  • “Skills for Defensemen,” by Jack Parker, Boston University
  • “Skills for Forwards,” by Rick Comley, Michigan State University
  • “Skills for Goaltenders,” by Joe Bertagna, Hockey East Association
  • “Maintaining A Balance,” by Bill Cleary, Harvard University (retired)
  • “Advancing As A Professional,” by Mike Schafer, Cornell University
  • “Starting A High School Program,” by Hal Tearse, Providence Academy in Plymouth, MN
Other chapters that have been assigned and their subjects accepted:
  • “Marketing and Fundraising Effectively,” by Joe Battista, Penn State University.
  • “Building A School-Based Program,” by Dr. Al Murdoch, Iowa State University
  • “Addressing Team and Individual Needs,” by Bill Beaney, Middlebury College
  • “Coaching With Integrity,” by Jim Tortorella, Colby College
  • “Using Small Area Drills and Games,” by Roger Grillo, Brown University
  • “Neutral Zone Play,” by Tim Taylor, Yale University
  • “Offensive Zone Attack,” by E.J. McGuire, NHL Central Scouting
  • “Planning and Conducting Productive Practices,” by Jerry York, Boston College
The following chapters are in need of authors: “Defensive Zone Coverage,” “Scouting and Preparation for Opponents,” “Special Teams and Situations,” Conditioning On and Off the Ice,” “Adjusting Workouts Throughout the Season,” “Communicating a Team Mission,” and “Promoting Alumni and Community Involvement.”

It is hoped that the final list of authors, to be approved by Human Kinetics, will both represent a cross-section of our sport and contribute to the marketing and sale of the book. Anyone wishing to contribute should contact Joe Bertagna via jbertagna@hockeyeastonline.com.
