Judy Oberting of Dartmouth College has been chosen as the national University Division Coach of the Year in the sport of women's ice hockey. The award, sponsored by the American Women's College Hockey Alli-ance (AWCHA) and voted through the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA), is in its third year for the University Division (Division I) (and first year for College Division (Division III).)
Dartmouth College's women's ice hockey team set new standards in Judy Oberting's second season be-hind the bench. The 1991 Dartmouth alumna guided the Big Green to a school record 21 wins, an appear-ance in the ECAC Championship game (after five semifinal defeats), and a spot in the AWCHA National Championships. The season ended with a satisfying victory in the Third Place Game over Minnesota-Duluth. The final mark was 21-12, including a perfect 3-0 mark against last year's national champions from Harvard University.
Oberting was a three-time first team All Ivy player as a Dartmouth defenseman, setting eight school records in her time. Her two-year record as head coach is 37-21 -5.
The runner-up for this year's award is Shannon Miller of the University of Minnesota-Duluth.
Finalists for the A WCHA University Division Coach of the Year A ward were Shannon Miller of the University of Minnesota-Duluth; Judy Oberting of Dartmouth College; and Julie Sasner of the University of Wisconsin.
