Norwich's McShane Is Top College Division Hockey Coach

For the second time in three years, Mike McShane of Norwich is the winner of the Edward Jeremiah Award as the College Division Coach of the Year. With a team picked for fifth place in the pre-season poll of ECAC East Division coaches, McShane guided his Cadets to a 22-1-1 regular season mark and both the ECAC East Regular Season and East Tournament championships. The Norwich season, which included the opening of its new Kreitzberg Arena, concluded in the NCAA Division III semifinals with a 4-2 loss to Wisconsin-Superior.

McShane, who played his college hockey for Charlie Holt at the University of New Hampshire, has won 317 games in 18 seasons as a head coach. Prior to taking over at Norwich, McShane had a successful Division I stints at St. Lawrence and Providence. He was the Eddie Jeremiah Award winner in 1997 as well.

Eric Hoffberg of RIT was this year's Jeremiah Award Runner-up. Other finalists for the award were: Jack Arena, Amherst; Steve Baumgartner, Concordia; Bob Emery, Plattsburgh; Steve Freeman, UW-River Falls; Jeff Meredith, Fredonia; Steve Nelson, UW-Superior; John Rolli, MA-Dartmouth; Greg Simone, Stonehill; Terry Skrypek, St. Thomas; and Glenn Thomaris, Elmira. The award will be presented at the AHCA Awards Banquet in Naples, FL on Saturday evening, May 1.
