Women's Hockey Coach of the Year Is Harvard's Katey Stone
As if a gaudy 33-1 record and a National Championship were not enough, Harvard University head coach Katey Stone now has something else to be proud of as her peers have chosen her National Women's Coach of the Year. The award, co-sponsored by the American Hockey Coaches Association and the American Women's College Hockey Alliance, is in its second year. Minnesota's Laura Halldorson was the inaugural recipient a year ago.
Harvard University enjoyed a banner year in 1998-99, winning Ivy, ECAC (regular season and tournament), and National championships. The Crimson also claimed the 1999 Patty Kazmaier Award winner in national scoring leader A.J. Mleczko.
A 1989 graduate of the University of New Hampshire, Stone came to Harvard in 1994. Her record through five seasons is 78-63-3. Trina Bourget of Sacred Heart was the Runner-Up. Other Finalists for the award were: Laura Halldorson, Minnesota; Brad Houston, Colgate; Heather Linstad, Northeastern; Jill Pohtllla, Augsburg; and Jeff Vizenor, St. Mary's. The award will be presented at the AHCA Awards Banquet in Naples, FL on Saturday evening, May 1.
